TEF panel recognition

In particular, the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) panel recognised our 2019-2023 course offering for:

  • effective support for students to succeed in and progress beyond their studies.

  • a supportive learning environment, and students have access to a wide and readily available range of outstanding quality academic support.

  • course content and delivery effectively encourage the provider’s students to engage in their learning and stretch students to develop their knowledge and skills.

What is the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)?

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) is a scheme run by the UK Office for Students (OfS) to assess the quality of undergraduate teaching in higher education providers. TEF ratings also provide motivation to higher education providers to excel in delivering:

  • high-quality teaching

  • consistently outstanding student satisfaction

  • a great student experience

  • successful student outcomes.

What are the TEF ratings?

The Office for Students (OfS) defines the three TEF ratings as:

  • Gold rating: The student experience and student outcomes are typically outstanding.

  • Silver rating: The student experience and student outcomes are typically very high quality.

  • Bronze rating: The student experience and student outcomes are typically high quality, and there are some very high-quality features.

A higher education providers can also receive a lower TEF rating of 'requires improvement' which means “the provider was assessed in the TEF and no overall rating was awarded. Improvement is required for a TEF rating”.

How the TEF ratings are calculated

The TEF panel evaluates higher education providers by looking for features of excellence in the following areas:

  • academic experience and assessment

  • resources, support and student engagement

  • positive outcomes

  • educational gains.

Core metrics are gathered from various UK sources, including the National Student Survey (NSS) and Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) to evaluate features within these areas. The panel also reviews evidence submitted by the higher education institution and students of each institution (if available).

The data is then analysed, and from this evaluation, the TEF panel determines an overall rating for higher education institutions as well as individual ratings of Gold, Silver or Bronze for two key areas:

  • student experience

  • student outcomes.

Why should you care about TEF ratings?

University or college students aiming for evidence of quality through TEF ratings.

The Teaching Excellence Framework aims to give future undergraduate students all the information they need to make well-informed choices about their educational journey.

A TEF rating should help you understand the quality of the teaching and learning experience you can expect at undergraduate level from different higher education providers.

When was the Teach Excellence Framework introduced?

TEF was introduced by the UK government in 2017. The aim of the assessment is to improve the standards of teaching in higher education and provide students with clearer information about the quality of education provided by different institutions. By evaluating teaching quality, learning resources, and student outcomes, the TEF aims to drive improvement and innovation in the higher education sector.
